I was curious what she was reading so I researched it. Le Grand Meaulnes by Alain-Fournier [x]

Essentially, a young man (Augustin) disappears from school but later returns. He had been to a costume party where he met the love of his life (Yvonne), whom lives with her widowed father and her brother (Frantz). When he returns to school, he makes it his mission to find her again. Some time passes and the young mans friend (Francois) manages to find the girl and reunites them. He ends up proposing, and the girl accepts. Unfortunately, he leaves a few days later in order to find her missing brother, who had disappeared after his fiancee rejected him. Yvonne remains at home alone, and gives birth to a daughter, only to die two days later. Francois inherits the house Augustin and Yvonne had inhabited and raises the little girl while awaiting Augustin’s return from searching for Yvonne’s brother. Francois uncovers a diary written by Augustin. It turns out, before Francois reunited the young couple, Augustin who had spent time in Paris searching for Yvonne, had met and romanced Frantz at the costume party previously. It takes some time, many years, in fact, before Augustin returns with Frantz and the fiancé who are together again. When he comes back, he takes over raising his daughter.

I don’t think there’s a huge connection or anything but I think it’s interesting that Mona is reading this because of Yvonne and her family. Yvonne lived with her widowed father and her brother. Sounds a little like Alison, no? ;)
